Traumatised immature teeth: From full obturation to revitalization Sufficient evidence of Regenerative Endodontic Treatment (RET) to stimulate an increase in root canal length, root wall thickness, apical closure and periapical healing has resulted in RET to be a promising approach in terms of clinical and radiographic outcomes. However, histologically, the ultimately desired outcome of regenerating the lost pulp tissue still remains largely unpredictable as multiple factors may affect the formation of repair tissue. Well-performed in vivo human model studies provided valuable information on the correlation between clinical, radiographic, and histological outcomes of RET. Variations in RET protocol, limited follow up period and varying methodologies to assess radiographic outcomes caused high risk for inconsistency between trials. On the other hand, full canal obturation in traumatically injured permanent immature incisors with tricalcium silicate-based cements has provided satisfactory clinical results in the long term with low prevalence of root fractures. Full canal obturation with tricalcium silicate cement could be considered a makeshift alternative to RET and traditional root canal therapy. |
